Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 can safeguard your family and you from invisible attacks coming from all sides – over the internet, email messages, social networks, USB drives, network-connected devices as well as chat conversations.

We all need an anti-virus, or more desirable, a Internet security suite, but not all of us want to deal with the day-to-day trivialities associated with administering that software. Designed for hassle-free security, Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 delivers Autopilot mode. With the Autopilot on, the software deals with virtually every security event by itself, without the need of asking how to handle it or even showing up a notice.

You’re going to be able to view latest activities whenever you like and a tiny number displays the number of unread events are pending. On top of that, this near-silent protection demonstrated to be extremely effective in 3rd party lab tests.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Dashboard

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Dashboard

Main window of Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 seems to be pretty much the same as that from Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2014. Both of them show overall protection state with a green, yellow, or red banner over the top, both indicate events awaiting review by using a tiny numeric indicator, and both of them show 4 panels at the same time symbolizing essential security features.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Security Modules

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Security Modules

The anti-virus provides 6 panels: Antivirus, ID Theft Protection, Privacy Control, Safego, Update, and Wallet. Bitdefender Internet Security suite comes with Firewall, Antispam, and Parental Control. You’re able to re-order all of the panels which means that your preferred 4 are those that will show up at startup.

Antivirus Protection

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Firewall

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Firewall

Malware detection is one of the most important aspects of robust internet security suites and Bitdefender’s protection is superior.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 consistently receives awards and certifications from third-party security testers. It demonstrates top malware detection rates. One of the reasons Bitdefender is so effective is that it scans all PC communications, both incoming and outgoing. The scans run in real time to stop threats before they infiltrate.

German-based AV-Test has given top scores to the Bitdefender internet security suite for protection. Bitdefender’s aggregate score is the best of all current security products.

3 Levels of defense against malware

The first level is to check for known virus signatures that Bitdefender has already collected in the cloud and for which there is a known cure.

The second level is to detect unknown threats and isolate them in a virtualized environment. Once it has them corralled, the software monitors whether the suspected files attempt to modify certain files, communicate with sensitive areas or produce files that are associated with known viruses. If the virus behaves well in the virtual environment, Bitdefender allows it to operate normally. If it demonstrates suspicious behavior, the application either deletes it or sends it to quarantine.

The third level of defense, called Active Virus Control, watches each specific process that is running on the PC. It then checks for any actions that resemble malware. Active Virus Control is different from technologies that monitor executable files when they start. It monitors processes continuously.

Security Features

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 offers an complete range of easy-to-use, effective security tools to protect your identity, your kids together with your computer.

Antiphishing protection

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Intrusion Detection

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Intrusion Detection

Phishing websites try to steal your login credentials by masquerading as financial sites or other sensitive sites. Many Internet security suites attempt to detect and block such sites, but just a few are effective. Bitdefender’s detection rate beat that of consistent antiphishing champ Norton by 3% points. Only McAfee Internet Security 2013 has done better than Bitdefneder Internet Security in recent tests.

Bitdefender Internet Security suite can prevent transmission of user-specified personal information via Web forms or email. Probably the best use of this feature is to enter your home address, phone number, and other private information, and then set it to block transmission by Limited or Standard account. That will keep the kids from over-sharing.

Password Managemet with Bitdefender Wallet

The new Bitdefender Wallet feature  will capture login credentials for  web sites that use a simple, normal login format, and it will fill in those credentials when you revisit the site. You can view and edit saved credentials, but you can’t organize them into categories, sort the list of websites, or search for specific information.

Bitdefender Wallet can even keep a varied selection of important personal data: contact information, email account details, credit cards, and more. You can view this information, if you have the master password, but Bitdefender won’t use it to fill Web forms, nor will it sync between multiple installations.

Bitdefender Safepay

Any time you visit a financial website, Bitdefender’s Safepay will offer to open it inside a hardened hacker-proof web browser. Also, you can open any randomly website within the Safepay internet browser. Bitdefender Wallet is available through Safepay, if you want to copy out saved bank or credit card data.

Bitdefender Autopilot

Bitdefender’s Autopilot mode is built to manage just about all security issues with no need of popups, alerts, or any other user notifications. To ensure that you’re certain that it is functioning, it now issues a comprehensive Security Report once every week, having inline shortcuts to resolve any specific reported issues.

Other useful security features are:

  • Safego – secures your Facebook account
  • Vulnerability scanner – reports problems like missing Windows patches and weak passwords
  • Yahoo Instant Messenger encryption
  • File Shredder – secure deletion of files and folders

Two-way Firewall

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 tracks what programs are using your Internet connection, and it monitors unknowns to make sure they’re not abusing that connection.

Even if you turn off Autopilot Bitdefender Internet Security handles almost every security decision on its own. If you really want the opportunity to allow or block access for new programs, you’ll have to dig into the settings and turn on Paranoid Mode.

Bitdefender Internet Security can put all ports in stealth mode, making them invisible from the outside.

Malware isn’t going to get past Bitdefender’s defenses by disabling the firewall, as it’s fully armored. I couldn’t terminate its processes, disable its services, or make any changes to its Registry settings.

Bitdefender managed exploits better than many. However, Norton Internet Security blocked every single exploit making this solution a little bit better than Bitdefender.

Antispam Protection

Bitdefender’s antispam component needs hardly any setup.

Bitdefender filters incoming POP3 email and integrates with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Thunderbird. For supported email clients, it automatically moves spam messages to a special Spam folder. Those using another email client can take advantage of the fact that it marks spam messages both in the subject line and in the header to create a message rule.

Within a supported email client you can use Bitdefender’s antispam toolbar to mark any message that was misfiled as spam, or mark spam messages that got through into the Inbox. You can also add a message’s sender to a whitelist or blacklist. For testing purposes, I didn’t use these features.

On test with 5.000 e-mail messages Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 let just 2.6 percent of undeniable spam into the Inbox, better than any other recent suite. Only dedicated antispam programs have done better in this test.

Parental Controls

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Parental Control

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Parental Control

You manage parental control for all of your Bitdefender installations, including Android installations, using the My Bitdefender online console.

For every kid, you start simply by entering the name, age, and gender. The age you enter will be used to pre-configure which website categories the content filter will block.

The parental control system will block access to websites matching 44 distinct categories, up from 30 in the previous edition. You can accept the age-related presets or make your own selection. In addition to a database categorizing known sites, Bitdefender performs real-time analysis to fine-tune the categorization process. Parents can also blacklist specific sites or block sites that contain specific keywords.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Child Profile in Parental Control

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Child Profile in Parental Control

New in this edition, the parental control system can block secure (HTTPS) websites, so a clever teen can’t evade parental control using a secure anonymizing proxy site. It also filters HTTPS traffic.

Parents can define a weekly schedule of hours when Internet access is permitted for each child. Even if the child has the Administrator access needed to change the system time, Bitdefender won’t be fooled.

From the online portal you can view all of the programs your child has used recently, and optionally block access to any program.

For Bitdefender installations on Android phones, parents get a list of the child’s texts and phone calls, with an option to blacklist any specific phone number. Unlike the IM blacklist, this blacklist has teeth; most children don’t have the option to just switch to another phone.

Facebook Monitoring

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Safego

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 – Safego

Facebook monitoring in the current edition is significantly expanded, though it still requires installation of a Facebook app on the child’s account.

Parents can view a list of recent posts or comments that include questionable content, as well as a list of the child’s Facebook groups and likes. Bitdefender can display all friends or limit the list to those with suspicious characteristics like no picture or no friends in common. There’s also an option to view all of the child’s photos, arranged by album.

If your child uninstalls the Bitdefender Facebook app, you’ll get an email notification.

Overall Performance

Bitdefender’s new PhotON technology in simple performance tests averaged about the same as last year’s product.

Boot time of operating system increased by 27% with Bitdefender installed, a little above the current suite average of 23%. Given that you probably boot the system no more than once per day, that’s not much of a worry.

When you visiting web sites Bitdefender Internet Security averaged 26% longer with Bitdefender watching out for Web-based trouble. That’s rather more than the current average of 18 percent, but still not necessarily anything you’d notice. Note, though, that Norton Internet Security had no measurable impact on this test.

Moving or copying a file counts as a file access and hence triggers an on-access scan by Bitdefender. The new PhotON technology is supposed to cut down on unnecessary scans by learning which files are safe, and indeed Bitdefender only slowed file move/copy operation by 13%, well below the current average of 23%.

Bitdefender’s effect on system performance is just about average, and you probably won’t be able to detect it.

How good is Bitdefender Internet Security 2014

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 does everything a suite should, and does it well.

Antiphishing and antispam components are especially effective, and its updated parental control systems is impressive.

It’s a big package, but its effect on system performance was no more than the average suite. If you want full-scale Internet security software that stays in the background, Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 is definitely a good choice.
